days of being asked to support our "Save the Sale Hotel" Campaign,
Paul had organised a local Campaign meeting. On our behalf, he went on to meet with the
developer/owners whose only intention was to demolish this fine building. In between his other Parliamentary workload,
Paul supported us with the petition to save this building and genuinely
believed that it should be saved. He also used his considerable political
experience and presence to support the Campaign with the Department of Culture,
Media & Sport
I thank God for Trafford Heritage Society, Sale Civic Society, the Victorian Society and all those societies

committed to our built heritage. I do not have a good word for Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council. The council is proposing to demolish St Paul’s Vicarage because according to a Trafford MBC spokesperson, quoted in the SAM (Front page 29.08.13), “the proposed demolition of the vicarage was weighed against the public benefit of providing outdoor play space for Springfield Primary School.” But this building is the fourth oldest in Sale. How, one may reasonably ask, do the local authorities of Paris, Rome, Prague, Munich, Salzburg, Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Budapest, Barcelona, &c., manage to educate their primary school children without demolishing their old buildings. Perhaps it is because these cities are not cursed with the kind of councillor who says:

“There is a lack of green space at this school. If we can provide some green space by removing that ugly building, it should happen as soon as possible.”

(Councillor Phil Gratrix, quoted in SAM 18.07.13).

I urge Trafford voters to withdraw support from any prospective councillor who supports the demolition of St.Paul’s Vicarage. It is a listed building, not without good reason, and therefore there is not a good reason for knocking it down. For the record, I am so grateful that we have a newspaper like the SAM which never fails to keep us informed about the lamentable record of Trafford MBC in the stewardship of our built heritage.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Under the Justice Secretary's proposals 70% of Probation Service work will be delivered by private and voluntary providers. This will include child protection cases, violence against the person and domestic violence cases, offenders with vulnerabilities and mental health problems, sex offenders and offenders at high risk of reoffending, such as prolific burglars, chaotic drug users and gang members. This will mean only an approximate 50,000 offenders, of the 240,000 currently managed by Probation, will continue to be managed and rehabilitated by Probation. This will pose huge risks to the public and victims of crime, end the effective local community partnerships Probation has built up, and put approximately 18,000 Probation staff at risk of redundancy.

If the Probation Service is dismantled and privatised, many offenders will no longer be supported to make the necessary changes in their lives, as the 'results' may not be quick and lucrative enough to private firms. Privatisation of a service such as this is very risky, especially if it is money orientated, as true and accurate 'results' may not be reflected in reality. Businesses want to make profits, not losses. Low to medium risk offenders can turn into high risk offenders overnight. People working with offenders should be well trained and skilled professionals.

Public sector Probation should continue to deliver this function in its entirety – the Justice Minister must be urged to consider public safety and abandon his plans.
Will Shakespeare celebrated his 454th birthday this year, and one of many
fitting tributes to the great man was presented by Folksy Theatre in
Walkden Gardens. The touring company, which is engaged in a
punishing schedule of appearances, gave an excellent, one night only,
performance of ‘Much
Ado About Nothing’ in
the gardens on Friday
evening 3rd August. The
principal players were
outstanding, particularly
Beatrice and Benedick,
whose verbal sparring
raised a constant stream
of laughter from the
audience. It’s not only
that this talented company gave a performance of a four hundred years
old play with a freshness as if it was written yesterday, but also that they
conjured a delightful entertainment with a few props and some music, in
what is essentially a garden. This kind of performance has of course
some advantages over the more formal stage. Benedick, struggling to
find a new voice as a lover, a role into which he was unexpectedly
pushed, began one scene at the very back of the audience and made his
way quite slowly towards the front, picking his way between the
deckchairs and picnics, seeking sympathy and inspiration from any
playgoer who might offer help. Don John, the ‘baddy,’ was denied the
same sympathy and booed for his pains; and quite properly too. A bit of
pantomime is never out-of-place in a performance of Shakespeare.
Dogberry the Constable was creatively portrayed with the help of a glove
puppet which looked suspiciously like Basil Brush. And when Claudio
was finally reconciled with Hero, the ‘aaaw!’ factor was palpable. The
rain kept away and the evening was warm. What fortunate times we live
in, and how lucky are we to be able to enjoy a great piece of theatre in
such a lovely setting. Thank you, Friends of Walkden Gardens and
Happy Birthday Will !

In this regard a Premises Licence Application was made to Trafford on 18.05.2010.

For further information about Greene King and the Hungry Horse format please visit the following websites:

www.greeneking.co.uk
www.hungryhorse.co.ukTrafford Heritage Societyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15596247772156436429noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6668911036051118627.post-35107238268981609222010-05-26T14:40:00.000-07:002010-05-26T14:41:22.859-07:00Clarification regarding sale conditionsThe owners of the Sale Hotel have confirmed that there is currently a restrictive covenant in place regarding the future use of the Sale Hotel. This restrictive covenant was put in place by the previous owners and will remain in force until June 2011. What will happen after this is unclear.

THS has been informed there have been a number of parties interested in purchasing the Sale Hotel ranging from public house/restaurant owners to people wishing to restore the building to its original use as a private dwelling. Interested parties may need to clarify different permissions, such as planning permission and licence premises application, depending on their wishes for future use and it is THS's understanding that a number of interested parties would need to seek
various permissions.

THS understands a decision has been made to sell the property to a public house/restaurant operator. As stated above, there is currently a restrictive covenant in force. However, an application for a premises/club premises licence was submitted to Trafford Council on 18th May, regarding which people are able to comment by writing to The Licensing Manager, Trafford Town Hall, Talbot Road, Stretford, M32 0YJ within 28 days of the application.Trafford Heritage Societyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15596247772156436429noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6668911036051118627.post-32832276235599188702010-05-22T04:29:00.000-07:002010-05-22T04:31:02.756-07:00Save the Sale - Club ProposalTrafford Heritage Societyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15596247772156436429noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6668911036051118627.post-65377852976799572432010-05-20T14:07:00.000-07:002010-05-20T14:10:03.085-07:00What next?
The Campaigners to Save the Sale Hotel were led to believe that the building could never be used again as a licenced premises for contractual reasons. Local residents were pleased that this would be the case. Following upon the news that an application has been made to the Local Authority, residents have approached Trafford Heritage Society to ask how this could happen. THS has offered to listen to these concerns and to gauge the weight of feeling against the Sale Hotel re-opening as a club. Some concern has already been expressed that a licenced club will cause an unacceptable level of noise nuisance.
Trafford Heritage Societyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15596247772156436429noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6668911036051118627.post-1021314149152250632010-05-19T11:58:00.000-07:002010-05-19T12:01:27.338-07:00Good News for the Sale Hotel!?!Trafford Heritage Societyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15596247772156436429noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6668911036051118627.post-39846748870085942152010-05-05T15:09:00.000-07:002010-05-05T15:15:25.431-07:00'This town has been sold to Tesco'

Guardian - 05/05/2010

"...This is what happened in Trafford in March, when a 168,000 sq ft store and accompanying development was granted planning permission, although an application for an 89,000 sq ft store on the same site was refused in 2006. One of the considerations of the assessment was to investigate compulsory purchase orders on the businesses in the immediate vicinity to redevelop the site. The redevelopment considered was a new supermarket.

Trafford Heritage Society conducted a survey of local residents and businesses to ascertain public opinion about the assessment. The overwhelming consensus was for the car park to remain and to remain free, as well as for it to be resurfaced. Trafford Heritage Society then coordinated a petition for local people to indicate their opposition to any redevelopment and to communicate their wish for the car park to remain open, free and for it to be adequately maintained. More than 3000 people signed the petition within a short time.

In November 2009, Trafford MBC then confirmed the site would not be redeveloped. To show their goodwill towards the residents of Sale Moor, the Council agreed to resurface the car park. This was completed in early 2010 and was officially reopened on Saturday by the Mayor Cllr David Higgins.

Sale Moor Traders Partnership provided a range of stalls and activities from local businesses and charities. The event was well attended by local people and council representatives. Matthew Colledge, Leader of Trafford Council said he was delighted to be at the opening and:
People are very pleased that their car park here in Sale Moor has not just been saved but its actually been refurbished as well and its of great benefit to the centre here, its a buzzing centre and we want to keep it that way, which is the whole reason why we have ensured that this work has been done to demonstrate were keen to preserve centres like this to future prosperity.

In response to concerns over future charging, Matthew Colledge said:
I just want to reassure all people; customers, residents and the community there will be no charging on this site. It will remain a free parking site

Trafford Heritage Society is very pleased the Council has listened to the views of the local community and hopes this will continue.
Trafford Heritage Societyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15596247772156436429noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6668911036051118627.post-26994486515872024322010-04-25T14:05:00.000-07:002010-04-25T14:15:11.119-07:00Messenger Newspaper: Sale Moor traders celebrate opening of Warrener Street car park
SALE Moor's resurfaced Warrener Street car park will be officially reopened on Saturday.

The Mayor, Cllr David Higgins, will do the honours at 10.30am and this will be followed by a host of activities laid on by the Sale Moor Traders Partnership.

Trafford Heritage Societyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15596247772156436429noreply@blogger.com0
